Information about Open Egypt

Open Egypt is an organization striving to raise awareness, transparency and communication in times of crisis, to empower peaceful expression and the delivery of aid where it is most needed.

We are a non-profit, neutral network entirely staffed by volunteers both in Egypt and globally.

We aim to provide non-affiliated tools for users to communicate updates they feel to be helpful and informative to both the peaceful demonstrations within Egypt, and to observers across the world.

Why are we doing this?

Tools such as the crowdmap platform have recently proved extremely useful in times of crisis such as in floods in Pakistan and the student protests in London.

At the beginning of the Egyptian crisis (25 January 2011) the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) set up a crowdmap platform to be used by the Egyptian population to keep each other informed in real time about the situation across the country. Unfortunately, their activity was interrupted on the 26th of January.

Due to the lack of reliable information and the scarcity of means of communication in times of crisis, we aim to provide a neutral platform for the Egyptian people to communicate safely. We aim to collaborate with other active crowdmap deployments in the region such as U-Shahid (responsible as well for last year’s deployment during the Egyptian elections) and 30janSudan, as well as other civil organisations in Egypt.

How we are doing it

We have set up a collection of communication tools, with crowdmap as its core, and implemented them in openegypt.org as the centralised platform for collating, analysing and communicating all the information incoming from various online channels regarding the Egyptian unrest.
